In the morning, a local train from Mojiko took me back to Kokura (which incidentally was the primary target the day Nagasaki was bombed but was saved by cloud cover that denied the bombardier a clear view), from where I got a Shinkansen to Shin-Tosu. Another local train took me to Takeo Onsen, and finally, another Shinkansen to Nagasaki.
At my hotel (The Global View) I dumped my bag and bought a day pass for the local tram network via which most of the major attractions of Nagasaki can be reached. I hopped on a tram at a stop right outside the hotel and headed for the Peace Park. There are many statues in this park, some donated from overseas, but the iconic centrepiece is one which stands 10m tall at the north end. The right hand points to the threat of nuclear weapons and the extended left hand symbolises eternal peace.
The following picture is from the nearby Peace Museum and shows the silhouette of a lookout and his ladder burnt onto a wall over 4km from the hypocentre.

As in the case of the Hiroshima museum, there were many harrowing photographs of bomb victims but I'm not going to show any here. The hypocentre is marked by a large monolith with the inscription "Enshrinement of the Names of Atomic Bomb Victims".

Tonight's Konbini haul: small bottle of coke, bottle of chūhai (14%, meant to be mixed, but I like it straight), bottle of Mitsuya Cider (apple flavoured fizzy water), egg and tuna sandwiches, caramel ice cream sandwich, salted cucumber and kelp, and chicken nanban with spaghetti and tartare sauce. The tartare sauce is a much sweeter version than ours so of course I love it!
